Indications and Dosage

Intramuscular
Primary immunisation

Adult: As a combination product with tetanus and inactivated poliomyelitis: 3 doses of each 0.5 ml at intervals of 1 mth, booster dose of 0.5 ml after 5 yr, repeated 10 yr later.
Child: 2 mth-10 yr: As a combination product with tetanus, pertussis (acellular), inactivated poliomyelitis and adsorbed haemophilus type B conjugate: 3 doses of 0.5 ml at intervals of 1 mth. >10 yr: As a combination product with tetanus and inactivated poliomyelitis: 3 doses of each 0.5 ml at intervals of 1 mth, booster dose of 0.5 ml after 5 yr, repeated 10 yr later.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity. Severe primary immunodeficiency. During or within 6 mth of stopping chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatment. Solid organ transplant and receiving immunosuppressants. Bone marrow transplant and within 12 mth of stopping immunosuppressive treatment. Patients receiving and within 3 mth of stopping high-dose systemic corticosteroids treatment. Immunosuppressed HIV positive patients.

Special Precautions

If alcohol or disinfectant is used for cleansing skin, ensure that it has evaporated before vaccination to prevent inactivation of live vaccines.

Adverse Reactions

Hypersensitivity. Induration, sterile abscess or local reaction, possibly with inflammation or lymphangitis at the inj site. Fever, headache and malaise.
Potentially Fatal: Anaphylaxis.

Drug Interactions

Live vaccines should normally be given at least 3 wk before or at least 3 mth after the use of immunoglobulin. Patients on immunosuppressants e.g. corticosteroids or antineoplastics may display reduced response to vaccines.

Action

Description:
Mechanism of Action: Diphtheria vaccines are used for active immunisation against diphtheria. The non-adsorbed vaccine has poor immunogenic properties and its effects are enhanced by admin as an adsorbed preparation. It is often used in combination with other vaccines e.g. tetanus toxoid.
